Handouts Helping You Explain EF and Strategies to Parents, Teachers, and the Student

 

Developed by the BRIEF2 authors and available only via PARiConnect, the new BRIEF2 Interventions Handouts are colorful, graphic PDF files designed to be shared with parents, teachers, and students. Written in easy-to-understand language, they explain what the executive functions are and include detailed strategies to support and improve behaviors at home and in school.

Handouts are specific to BRIEF2 scales and are generated based on elevated (T ≥ 60) scores. Although several handouts may be available per report, only one use is deducted. They are available only after a BRIEF2 Score or Interpretive Report is completed.

Parent/Teacher Forms offer up to 10 handouts each:  

  • An overall handout, “Supporting and Improving Executive Functions,” is always generated. It provides general information about the executive functions, explains why they are important, and offers general tips for improvement.
  • Additional scale-specific handouts (Emotional Control, Flexibility, Inhibition, Initiation, Organization of Materials, Planning and Organization, Self-Monitoring, Task Monitoring, and Working Memory) are generated for each scale score that is elevated. 

Scale-specific handouts include:

  • In-depth information about the relevant area of executive dysfunction (e.g., flexibility, working memory) to build understanding.
  • Detailed, evidence-based supports and accommodations that parents and teachers can implement.
  • Recommendations and interventions to help improve student behaviors at home and in school.
  • Functional goals that can be used in IEPs, 504 plans, or other intervention plans.
  • Resources to help parents, teachers, and students explore and learn more.

The Self-Report Form (for ages 11 to 18 years) offers a single handout, “Understanding and Improving Your Executive Functions,” which includes:

  • General information about the executive functions.
  • Comprehensive, customized information based on elevated scale scores (Inhibition, Flexibility, Emotional Control, Working Memory, Self-Monitoring, Task Completion, and Planning and Organization) to help adolescents better understand and take charge of their executive function challenges.
