A degree from an accredited 4-year college or university in psychology, counseling, speech-language pathology, or a closely related field plus satisfactory completion of coursework in test interpretation, psychometrics and measurement theory, educational statistics, or a closely related area; or license or certification from an agency that requires appropriate training and experience in the ethical and competent use of psychological tests. The TORC 4 can be used to identify children and adolescents whose silent reading comprehension scores are significantly below those of their peers, to document student progress in remedial programs, and to investigate reading problems in children and adolescents.

Features and benefits

  • Five subtests (Relational Vocabulary, Sentence Completion, Paragraph Construction, Text Comprehension, and Contextual Fluency) measure word identification and contextual meaning.
  • Subtest scores are combined to form the Reading Comprehension Index, which represents students’ ability to understand contextual printed material.
  • All new normative data were obtained using a sample of 1,942 students in 14 states.
  • Reliability coefficients have been computed by age and subgroup within the normative sample.
  • All new validity studies are reported, including a rigorous analysis of the TORC-4’s sensitivity and specificity; floor effects have been eliminated.
